These two esteemed organizations have combined resources to provide a dynamic academic opportunity for business students. Certified Management Accountants of Ontario and the Schulich School of Business at York University created a combined program that enables students to concurrently obtain a Certified Management Accounting (CMA) designation while earning a Master of Business Administration (MBA).

This double-pronged achievement was made possible when Schulich and CMA Ontario administrators realized they shared a remarkably similar focus. Schulich's MBA syllabus contained the prerequisite studies required to write the CMA Entrance Examination and also met its high accreditation standards. Students are the benefactors of this dove-tailed arrangement that yields two prestigious credentials - just the ticket for business graduates seeking a firm foothold in today's competitive job market.

Take a few minutes to investigate this unique opportunity. You'll save significant time and money by concurrently earning these credentials instead of achieving them individually. You are required to take 16 CMA prerequisite topics as part of your Schulich MBA studies. Once these are successfully completed, you will prepare a Board report and the CMA Case Examination - Schulich MBA graduates are exempt from the Entrance Exam. You must also acquire 24 months of related, practical learning experience approved by CMA Ontario (past experience may qualify). As a Schulich MBA grad, your participation is waived from the Strategic Leadership Program, classroom sessions that conceptualize learning acquired in the field.

How Do You Benefit?

A recent survey of Ontario job placement ads indicated that 85% of accounting and senior level management positions required a professional accounting designation of their candidates. Job prospects expand when business school graduates are equipped with a professional accounting certificate. Additional doors are opened with a CMA designation because its skill set is diverse and applicable to virtually every organization and every aspect of business operations. The choices are practically limitless.

Our expertise is initially gleaned through an academic approach that is later reinforced through practical application in real world situations. Armed with this unique blend of text book and applied learning, newly-certified CMAs hit the ground running and quickly find employment opportunities in any number of fields.

As leaders in management accounting, our expertise is grounded in three pillars of foundational knowledge: accounting, management and strategy. Our capacity to independently focus on each element or, alternatively, to amalgamate information from all three, is becoming increasingly relevant to today's business environment. Our ability to breathe life into numbers by understanding their implications and making strategic decisions based on them, adds tremendous value to any department of any business. Many CEOs and CFOs are CMAs whose abilities as articulate communicators, team players, creative thinkers and problem solvers were recognized and sought for these leadership positions.

Because Schulich MBA is accredited by CMA Ontario, Schulich MBA candidates are exempt from writing the CMA Canada Entrance Examination. Candidates must write the CMA Canada Case Examination and complete a comprehensive Board Report. More detailed information about these processes is available in the "Requirements" section. Upon completion of these requirements, you will qualify for professional designation as a Certified Management Accountant.
