Required Topics

All candidates must complete specific required topics. These topics cover a wide spectrum of business disciplines and provide the foundation knowledge essential for advanced business studies in the CMA Strategic Leadership Program. Only the CMA profession requires this breadth of business knowledge as an admission requirement.

The required topics consist of the following subject areas:

Management Studies:   General Accounting Studies:
Management Accounting:   Financial Accounting:
--Introductory   --Introductory
--Intermediate   --Intermediate
  Advanced     Advanced
Corporate Finance   Taxation
Operations Management   Internal Control
Information Technology
Strategic Management   Related Studies:
Human Resources   Economics
Marketing   Statistics

Students enrolled in university or applied degree business, commerce or accounting programs can typically cover the required topics as part of their degree course requirements - but it is critical to choose course electives carefully. Candidates who have already graduated from university without completing all of the required topics may do so by attending university courses taken post-graduation or by attending CMA Ontario's intensive 7-month Accelerated Program (specific minimum required topics are required to qualify for this program).

To research Ontario universities and courses that satisfy our CMA required topics, please visit Your Post Secondary Courses. Please note that not all universities offer part-time or continuing studies courses. Once you have reviewed our Prerequisite Studies Charts, you should contact any university directly to inquire about their specific course offerings.

University or applied degree graduates who have completed all topics with a minimum grade of 60% in each undergraduate course or 70% in each graduate course are eligible to write the CMA Entrance Examination. Note: Select university programs have been accredited by CMA Canada. Eligible graduates of these programs may qualify for an exemption of the CMA Entrance Examination.

To determine your eligibility for the Entrance Examination, complete and print the transcript evaluation cover sheet and mail or fax it with a copy of your university transcripts to Alison Williamsfor a free evaluation. You may submit official or unofficial copies of your transcripts for the evaluation; however, if your evaluation is based on unofficial copies you will be required to provide official copies to CMA Ontario prior to enrolling in the Entrance Examination (or Strategic Leadership Program for those with a waiver for the Entrance Exam).
